This is an attractive little armoire with an interesting feature for one so small. It comes apart in the old fashioned way, down the middle. You will see the seam in the images, at the crown and at the base molding. The two halves slot together all round with tongue and groove. Each half has a hardwood cleat on the top, and on the bottom. Once pulled together the cleats are locked with wooden “keys”. It may not be necessary to take it down but it’s a useful feature if it needs to go up a narrow staircase or round a tight corner.
The piece has great color and character with some nice reeding on the upper door rail, the front corners and corbels. It has a bold crown and a useful, hand-cut dovetailed drawer in the base. On the interior is a hat shelf and hanging pole.
Hungary, circa 1880
