The Unfitted Kitchen
While most of us are glad to have as much kitchen storage space as possible, the modern fitted kitchen, with its array of cabinets for every purpose, some with two tiers and counter space between, covering every wall, sometimes breaking for, but more often bridging, a sink, or range, or refrigerator, can appear sterile and institutional.
Hence the trend towards the "unfitted kitchen".
Pine is "on friendly terms with open fires, with wrought iron hinges,with hewn beams and corner posts, with rough-plastered walls or robin's egg blue panelling and wide board flooring painted pumpkin yellow. All these things speak the same language. But 'ware lest you introduce a piece of mahogany to such a company! The mahogany raises its eyebrows at favourite scratches and rounded edges of the pine, while the pine peeks out of the corners of its eyes at the painstaking satinwood inlay and wonders what it is all about".
