What a beautiful and interesting trunk in original paint from Germany. The front of the piece is sponged in shades of red and burgundy with three arched baroque-style panels, trimmed with green molding, equally spaced across the front. Inner faux panels of red and white paint follow the line of the molding, each containing a delicate bouquet of flowers tied with a ribbon.
On the sides the background palette is used as a stylized grain paint of horizontal stripes with a square of white paint superimposed. The top decoration is largely worn away, but one can make out some faint floral work with ribbons.
The top lifts on long iron strap hinges to a deep storage well inside. There is a large candle box with lid on the upper right inside.
The white banner stretching above the front panels dedicates the trunk to Elisabeth Grossenbacher Sund in the year 1848. It may celebrate her birth, or her wedding, or some other occasion. There is no hard and fast rule. The maxim translates as “Every Child begs God for his Grace and Forgiveness”.
Germany, dated 1848
