The case of a chest of drawers is basically a four-sided dovetailed box with backboards nailed to the back and internal runners for drawers to slide in and out at the front. Moldings and other decorations may be applied, as the cabinetmaker desires. On this chest the pins of the dovetails on the top are exposed and ogee molding is applied to create the crown and conceal the tails. Similarly, the pins of the dovetails on the drawer fronts are exposed. The front corners are decorated with hardwood split columns, once ebonised, now worn through in parts, in between long pyramid appliqués. This piece has a lovely color, hand-waxed to a warm honey glow.
