On an oxblood ground is some outstanding tapestry-style decoration of stylized floral and foliate designs. On the front two frames of ogee molding create faux panels to contain the design. Other flourishes, including fruit on the vine, surround the panels. Above them is the date 1870 and the initials “KP”. Similar designs are on the sides and the top, where runners of laurel wander around the design. The lid lifts on long iron strap hinges to a deep storage well with a lidded candle box on the upper left. The back still bears most of a label indicating the trunk had travelled between Bayreuth and the central station in Hof, Bavaria. Close examination of some Victorian script, also on the back, may reveal more names, dates, or other information about the trunk.
The bad news is that the trunk has a powerful twist to it, such that, while it sits level on the floor without wobble, and the lid fits snugly on the case, one front corner is a full inch or more lower than the other.
Germany, dated 1870
