This Folk Art painted trunk has the form of a faux mule chest, pretending to have drawers with ceramic knobs, when, in fact, the lid opens on two very long iron strap hinges to a deep storage well. In the upper left is a candle box, the hinged lid of which has a deep carved reed in the center. The reeded carving is repeated on the base and capital on the front corners, where they anchor a hardwood split baluster. On the side, barely perceptible, is a painted outlined panel containing two swirls of stylized grain paint. Each side has an iron bail handle, set low in the panel. The top and front have a dark green/black background. On the front is a burst of flowers and leaves in subdued autumn colors. Browns and yellows and rusty reds. The top “drawer” bears a baroque-style pressed brass escutcheon. On the top it looks like Spring has arrived, with white and red and orange, flowers and seed-pods abound!
As is usual, the back is hand-planed and unpainted and exposes the hand-cut dovetails on the back corners.
