This is a charming very rustic hooded rocking cradle with an interesting and unusual “bird house” with a circular opening, built into the shallow hood, presumably to store small items; perhaps toys or other distractions. The sides are built from yellow pine, some of the boards used are over 14” wide, and the hood is oak, with rockers and corner posts of oak for durability. The square corner posts end in tall turned finials, perfect for gently rocking the baby to sleep. All pegged construction with oxidizing nails to the hood and side trim.
Ireland, circa 1880.
