Shades of red fading and blending into each other in a stylized grain pattern are used to beautiful effect in the background of this extraordinary painted trunk. The design on the front is of three recessed arched panels, each with a brightly-colored bouquet of flowers in the center. The columns of the arches alternate light and deep oxblood and the extrados’ are bordered with laurel leaves. Above the far left column is the number “18”, and “54” is above the right. The center arch has ‘Johannes” on one side and “Wertmuller” on the other. A trompe de l’oeil effect mimics a raised panel on the sides with a clever use of linear patterns and red shading. Sturdy iron lifting handles are in the center of each side. The linear work largely remains on top though much of the body of the design is worn away. The top lifts on magnificent iron strap hinges to a deep storage well with a large candle box on the upper left. The lock and key are original and in good working order.
