ABOUT OUR CHESTS OF DRAWERS

The chest of drawers as we know it evolved from the trunk or blanket chest during the seventeenth century. First, drawers were added to the lower section of a trunk making a hybrid piece known appropriately as a mule chest. Then the lift top was eliminated and the chest of drawers emerged as a case with two, three, or more rows of drawers.

There are few pieces as ubiquitous or versatile as the chest of drawers. Of course every bedroom should have one or two for folded clothing but also, depending on the size and configuration of drawers, the chest can be used as a changing table in the nursery, for linen storage in the dining room, or for towels and dressing gowns in the bathroom.

Demand for long chests with side by side rows of drawers or for tall pieces six or seven drawers high far exceeds the supply of antique pieces. These can be custom made from reclaimed pine in our European workshops.
