A trunk or blanket chest with a drawer at the bottom is known as a mule chest, probably because it is a cross between a blanket chest and a chest of drawers. This is a handsome one with all pegged and dovetailed construction and a number of other nice features. The top has oak breadboard ends for appearance and stability. It lifts on long iron strap hinges to a deep storage well with a lidded candle box on the left. The front simulates two drawers above the real drawer. The center one is flanked by hardwood split balusters. The top one has two runs of horizontal reeding with a baroque pressed zinc escutcheon.
