25VJL49 Pine Trunk or Blanket Chest in Original Decorative Paint, dated 1830 34.5”Wx20.5”Dx20”H $1495.00
We love antique trunks in original red and green paint. This small blanket chest has a worn green background all over, except, as is usual, the back, which is polished only. The lid molding, the base molding, and the trim that forms the panels on the front and sides are in deep oxblood red. In the panels the background is mustard. Each panel contains a representation of the same transparent vase of stylized tulips and roses. The painting is primitive and is in generally good order though the left side panel is clouded in the center. The top, of course, is more worn. Two medallions with a white washed ground and floral work within are superimposed on red squares. There also appears to be a broad border all around the top. Above the front panels there is a line of text which closer inspection will probably prove to include the name of the person for whom the chest was made. It ends with the clear numerals “1830”.
The top lifts on iron ring and split pin hinges to reveal a deep storage well with a lidded candle box on the upper left.
Hungary, dated 1830.
