We haven’t seen one of these lovely Louis-Philippe style bases in a quite a while. Originally used as a dry sink, the serpentine lid lifts on iron hinges to expose the well where a bowl would stand when in use. Beneath the well is a shallow hand-cut dovetailed drawer with a divided interior. Beneath that a paneled door on a pivot hinge opens to a single shelf on the interior. The front corners of the case are chamfered and Louis-Philippe corbels are mounted at the top and feet in the same style at the floor. A strip of beading is placed between them. This could be a vanity piece for a child’s or guest bathroom and it is not too tall for use as a nighstand. Hand-polished to a warm honey glow.
Netherlands, circa 1890
