This is a 1000ml vintage hand-blown glass wine thief or calabash from Eger, Hungary, the home of “Egri Bikaver”, the famous “Bull’s Blood” red wine. It is used for sampling wine from the barrel. The tip is inserted into the side bunghole of a barrel laid horizontally. Draw on the mouthpiece to siphon a sample into the tube, and bowl if required, and hold it with a thumb over the mouthpiece. Place the end over the sampling glass and release the required amount of the wine into the glass. In great condition with some smoothing to the mouthpiece.
Hungary, circa 1950.
