This is a very heavy early hornbeam mortar, hand-carved from a single trunk and probably used for pounding nuts or grain. Hornbeam is valued for treen objects such as this because of its hardness and weight. The narrow waist of the piece concentrates the weight in the chunky bottom block, providing stability when material is pounded in the well at the top.

This would make a great hallway or bedside catch-all for keys and spare change. It could be a unique plant stand or even a cup holder beside an armchair.

Netherlands, circa 1850.
