This is a table that brings a smile to your face. From its worn and pitted top with a neatly-executed diamond patch to its curiously sphinx-like feet with replaced rectangular pads, it is a delight to look at, both in appearance and construction. The top is from three boards, two of which are 12” wide, and has rounded and notched corners. Its rich patina is enhanced by traces of red and blue paint in the end grain. A hardwood cleat, which once supported a drawer, is dovetailed into the underside to maintain the stability of the top while allowing the boards to expand and contract as one. The scalloped trestle ends are pegged into the hardwood cleats and then joined by a central stretcher slotted through the ends and secured with original wooden keys. At the bottom the trestle ends are fully mortised into the foot rail.
Every edge of this lovely piece is rubbed smooth by well over a century of use. Old blue paint is worn and crackled through to earlier red and then to polished wood for a really cheerful appearance.
Hungary, circa 1860.
