This is an attractive pew-style pine bench or settle.  Straight back rails and molded back stiles form two frames, each containing eight plain round spindles.  The seat is through-tenoned into the shapely sides and the centre support is through-tenoned into the seat.  Four triangular braces are later additions and there are one or two nicely-done repairs.  The piece is finished in old worn mustard paint over earlier white and over black on the framed spindles, with many areas worn through to polished pine, particularly in the middle of the seat, over the centre leg, where the heaviest users have clearly chosen to sit.  We confess that the sitting is a little severe, insisting that one sits up straight, but this piece would serve well with a row of children along one side of a six or seven foot table, in an entrance hall, or anywhere that low profile, short-term seating is required.

Hungary, circa 1870.
