This exceptional pine box bench with oak legs has a rather stately appearance.  The straight top rail, nicely cut-away at the ends has two rows of incised fluting, which are repeated vertically on the central back splat, which separates two rows of full turned balusters.  Three more turned balusters adorn each boldly curved arm.  The broad seat lifts on iron strap hinges to reveal a deep well divided into four generous compartments, the three dovetailed-in partitions acting as sturdy supports for the seat.  The piece is finished in shades of old green paint, worn through to earlier blue and then to original dark grain paint and bare wood in parts.  The seat and balusters are in an old worn off-white paint on the earlier colours.  This bench once stood on a stone floor and has nicely executed repairs to the bottoms of the feet.
Hungary, circa 1885.
