This is an outstanding antique carpenter’s workbench, built as solid as a rock.  The trestle-style base is made entirely of oak.  The uprights are an irregular 3” square, hand-cut through-tenoned and pegged top and bottom to the horizontal members, which are of only slightly less weight.  The trestles are joined by two 2.5”x4” stretchers, pulled tight on heavy iron bed bolts.  The bench surface is comprised of a massive oak slab, 15” deep and 4” thick, joined to a 6” board of yellow pine of the same thickness, bearing all the chops and scars of decades of honest use.  The tool trough at the rear has a yellow pine floor, as is usual, and a replaced pine backboard. This piece has only one vise, on the right hand side, which operated on an iron screw and bar.  The sides show some handsome exposed hand-cut dovetails in the oak.  The vise no longer functions and has been sealed closed with a patch of oak for safety.  The bench is more versatile for the absence of a front vise, which adds so much depth to so many of these pieces.  At 26” deep it could be a side table, a sofa table, a server in a restaurant, or a magnificent TV console.  It also works extremely well as a bench in a home workshop.

Hungary, circa 1890.
