By the end of the 19th century the dresser had become firmly established as the most important item of domestic furniture in Irish rural houses, hence the invitation to dance, "'round the house" with the admonition to "mind the dresser". This fine example, typical of Irish rustic construction and almost entirely original, possesses many of the features most admired by afficianados of Irish country furniture. The angular crown with simple incised decoration sits above a frieze of applied diamond motif. Wide tongue, groove and bead boards are the backdrop for three shelves with slanted plate supports. The base features two drawers above two doors, the panels given an octagonal appearance by the application of fantail moldings. The piece stands on bold bracket feet.  Ireland, circa 1870
