This is a beautiful early nineteenth century Provencal two door twelve panel armoire in cherrywood.  All hand-made and joined with oak pegs, with little decorative adornment but with much understated elegance, it is a pleasure to examine the work of the craftsman that built it.  The upper door panels were once wood, long ago changed to brass grilles.  The backboards are of hand-planed chestnut and the interior has four shelves, three of them hand-planed, which have been retrofitted to be adjustable on wooden sawtooth track.  The working lock and key are period but not original to the piece.

This piece is far from pristine but shows all the character and wear of close to two hundred years of use.  It has dings and chips and inactive woodworm holes and one or two small repairs.  It has a lovely patina on its hand-planed surface and is wonderfully smooth, both to the eye and to the touch.

France, circa 1830.
