Rather like a diminutive linen press, this is a lovely little English pine cupboard on chest, built in two pieces, in mostly original condition.  The upper section has a bold but simple crown and two wide-swinging paneled doors with replaced ceramic knobs, which open to a generous linen storage space, divided by a single shelf.  The lower section is a two over three drawer chest, each drawer delicately hand-dovetailed, and with original ceramic knobs, which stands on original tall turned feet.  Five of six six locks are in good working condition (one is missing) and operate on replacement keys.

This is an unusual piece with all the best-loved characteristics of English nineteenth century pine.  It is very plain but displays superb joinery.  Its modest size would be ideal in a guest bedroom, where the cupboard could perhaps house a small television or spare blankets, or in a basement or mudroom, for storing outdoor clothing.

This piece is in good sturdy condition with smoothly operating drawers, but is by no means pristine.  It bears dings and scars and the small dark stains of oxidized nail heads.  There is a little filler here and there and a well-executed wood patch or two but, worn smooth at the edges from a century and a half of use, it will add stand-alone character to any location.

England, circa 1865.
